Prince George Newspapers - Searching Tips

Searching

Enter a word or words in the search boxes

User lower case; search terms are not case sensitive.
e.g. giscome will retrieve newspaper articles that contain the word Giscome

Use an asterisk * as a wild card at the end of a word or string of letters to broaden your search results
e.g. forest* will retrieve forest, foresters, forests, forestry

Use Exact Phrase box to enter a phrase
e.g. upper fraser will retrieve the words Upper Fraser together, and will ignore separate references to the word upper and the word fraser

Use Any of the Words box if you have different words describing the same thing
e.g. forest* lumber* will retrieve articles that contain any of these words and their endings also use this box if there are variant spellings in a word
e.g. centre center will retrieve articles that contain either of these spellings

Combine boxes for more specific searches
e.g. Exact phrase: giscome + Any of the Words: forest* lumber* logging will retrieve articles about giscome that also include the words forest(ry) or lumber(ing) or logging

Use By date to search the newspaper database by selected dates only, as in the following example - we have limited the search to 1960-1961 only, and chosen to search the entire "Full text" field

Viewing Results

Search results are presented in date order.

Click on the Image, or on the "Page 1" link at the right of the screen, to view the page that includes your search words

You can view results in a different thumbnail layout, shown below. Go to Preferences (top menu bar), select View Option: thumbnails, and click on Apply Changes

On the Preferences page, you can also set the number of results per page, e.g. instead of showing 20 results per page you can show 100 at a time.

View Page

The opening page will show a complete page from the newspaper. Use scroll bars to view the contents of the page.

A quick way to see where your words appear in text

To see where on the page your word(s) appear, pull down the "View" menu, choose "page & text" and click "go" - a new screen will open, showing the text of the article in a separate column. Your word(s) will be highlighted in red in the text. Please note that, in older issues of the newspapers, words were not always legible when the scanning was done. Some garbled text will appear.

Choose view of "page & text" and click "go"

View text in right column; your word(s) are highlighted in red

Copy/Paste/Save/Print Articles

You can clip an article using the 'clip' gadget at the right end of the menu bar

A new window will open with the entire page on it. To select an article, click the mouse and drag the box diagonally to select part of the image. In the new window, right-click to perform other browser functions, such as save, print and e-mail.

Here is an example of how an article can be selected

Here is an example of the clipped article, which you can save (File/Save), print or email

Other ways to save text

If you are viewing the double-column page with text on the right, you can select a portion of the text and copy/paste it to a word processor.
Tip: use CTRL C to copy and CTRL V to paste.

    Citing the Article

Click on "reference url" on the menu bar above the newspaper page to get a web address for the specific page you are viewing. This will bring up a box containing the http://address, that you can use in your essay or paper when you are citing the article.
